To prevent levee failures, the Corps of Engineers has engaged Drilling Service Co. to drill relief wells to provide a controlled discharge point for underseepage during high river levels.
Without relief wells, the underseepage may cause sand boils and failure of the levee.
Relief wells act like valves to relieve the water pressure that may otherwise undermine the levee. Common installation techniques include the use of the bucket auger and air reverse circulation methods.
